Building up a new future for young people in the North East

We’re always keeping our blog up to date with our latest company updates and helpful information for both businesses and people looking to get into work. Feel free to check out some of our other updates or get in touch if we can help in any way.

Winning a new contract is always something to be celebrated at Geon, but nothing has been closer to our hearts more recently than our latest contract win which led to the creation of the BUILD UP training series.

Starting with Construction but zooming in with Automotive close behind, the BUILD UP programmes are dedicated to developing individuals in an urgent bid to combat skills shortages in the North East of England across key industrial sectors. Too often, we see opportunities in these industries dictated by particular skill sets and trades but that’s what makes the beauty of the BUILD UP so much stronger. We knew from day 1 the power needed to remain firmly in the learner’s hands to choose their career path. Because after all, it’s a learner’s market!

In a post COVID world, where quite literally anything goes, capturing the attention of learners, especially young people of 16-24 years require a real game changing approach.

The pandemic has taken a particularly heavy toll on this segment making them a critical age group who now face record unemployment and rising mental health issues. Two topics we cannot ignore. The BUILD UP’s hybrid approach to learning becomes all the more prevalent as this programme has been developed to ignite a new energy in the young people within our local communities who want to make a difference and have their voices heard.

In a recent study from The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), more than half of young people (51%) identified education, experience and learning as one of the three most important issues the UK government must prioritise for young people. This was followed by protecting the environment and addressing climate change (45%), health and wellbeing (43%) and employment and training (43%).

If we are to have a world that works for young people, consistent listening and learning from their ideas is critical. For us this begins with the BUILD UP programme. Where young people are not defined by what it sits on their CV, but only their eagerness to learn and succeed.

It’s been an exciting journey so far for team Geon as we gear up towards launch day and we couldn’t be happier with our latest collaborations of like-minded employers in the Construction and Automotive sectors who share our view on nurturing a new energy amongst young individuals. It’s a real strength in numbers game and we’re proud to be behind the wheel that’s driving this level of change for the people and industries we work for.

Ultimately our message to the young people of the North East is: if you want it, we’ll help you get there! It’s as simple as that. There’s no yellow brick road. If anything, we’re your bend in the road, to encourage you “to do you” and find what’s right.

It’s not too late to get involved. Learners and employers alike, come see what our BUILD UP Programmes are all about:
