Route 2 Retrofit – Launching Our New Programme

It’s been a very exciting week here at RE:geon Training as we have finally been able to announce the secured funding for our new Route 2 Retrofit Programme! Set to land in August, this course is designed to upskill and fast-track entire workforces as well as key individuals in the necessary green growth skills required for delivering Retrofit.

You might be wondering, what is Retrofit? and why is there so much hype? Well… Retrofit is fast becoming the talk of the Construction & Social housing industries because it’s an urgent issue that we need to address.

The UK must reduce its CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050. Over a quarter of current emissions are attributed to the 26 million homes throughout the UK. Approximately 80% of the homes we live in today will still be in use in 2050. So the challenge is how we get there. We need to have a plan for tackling the 26 million homes that aren’t CO2 friendly now and how we keep that going towards 2050.

Before we get stuck into the ‘How”, let’s recap on the definition for the “What”…

There’s no official definition of retrofitting, however, in its most simplest form, retrofitting is the process of upgrading existing buildings to support the Government’s Carbon Agenda. The aim is to boost the property’s energy efficiency rating through the addition of new technology or features. Some of which include the installation of new LED lighting to state-of-the-art heating systems, ventilation and wall / loft insulation. There are several ways to retrofit a house, varying from single-room improvements to whole house, or even ‘deep retrofits’, but each process is designed with the same goal in mind – to increase energy efficiency, reduce emissions and protect the planet. This focus on efficiency is why retrofitting differs from previous approaches to renovating a house or making home improvements for aesthetic purposes. Retrofit directly leads to the outcome of Regeneration.

Retrofitting is a planned process. Particularly in social housing, and it’s now forming a huge part of client contracts – of which businesses can only be awarded if they’re suitably skilled and ‘in the know’. Likewise if individuals are seeking jobs within these businesses, if they are clued up on the necessary skills for Retrofit, they have a far better chance of career success – so you can see where the dots are all joining up for why this is so important to get behind!

As we stand today, many businesses in the construction and social housing sectors, as well as the individual workers within them aren’t currently skilled in Retrofit. And in some cases, they don’t understand Retrofit at all, because let’s face it, it’s a minefield! Combine that with an increasing amount of regulation associated with the Retrofit process (“PAS 2030 and PAS 2035”) and it can feel an incredibly daunting concept to navigate – even though the outcome of Retrofit is so great.

That’s why we’ve been hard at work behind the scenes with the support of the RE:GEN Group to design bespoke training modules in Green Growth Skills to help businesses and individuals better understand Retrofit. We’ve combined our years of training expertise with RE:GEN’s knowledge on the ground to elevate the insight and experiential aspects of the course for all to benefit from. Our goal? To share this knowledge and new set of skills with as many people as we possibly can through the promotion of ‘Route 2 Retrofit’.

So how do we deliver these courses?

The Route 2 Retrofit is here to stretch and develop your existing skillsets to better prepare you for the future. Our Programme has been specifically designed for individuals aged 19+ who are already employed and in the job market but could benefit from specific areas of training to boost their employability and progress them up the career ladder as well as helping them to contribute towards their employer’s sustainability targets.

We take an Employer-Led approach to our programme. For an employer, this means that you will be involved in the design and delivery of the course from day one to ensure it taps into your business goals and growth strategy. We will tune into the culture and values of your brand to devise bespoke modules that reflect who you are, what you stand for, your current hiring needs and your future ambitions. For a learner, this means that we can help you better understand what businesses are looking for and be able to firmly get your foot within the door for the next steps of your career journey.

Why do we take an employer-led approach? Well because the results are always far greater!

While working with the RE:GEN Group, in Year 1 we saw a 67% progression rate. In Year 2, an 80% progression rate and when revisiting the teams, we are delighted to confirm a 100% sustained progression – with all apprentices still excelling in the full-time roles they transitioned to after our courses.

What’s more, green skills are largely transferable skills. This means that they’re beneficial to a range of job roles and sectors, so even if you’re out of industry, there’s still a lot to be gained from the Route 2 Retrofit.

Thanks to the securing of multiple contracts with the Government’s Green Growth Skills Fund to better support businesses in their understanding of Domestic Retrofit, our Route 2 Retrofit is a funded programme, making it far more accessible for individuals to come on board as well as increasing the feasibility for entire workforces to be upskilled. We know that there is usually a very high cost associated with these courses so being able to break down this barrier is a huge achievement of ours!
